after just joining the league last year, im hoping my season of observations can be seen as impartial as possible.
The main problem that i've seen is that the salary cap system doesn't do much at all. to simplify things, poor teams sell as much cap room as possible to get as many late round picks as possible, and hopefully hit on a few. This, on its own, is fine, but much of the cap that is sold is bought by the same teams that have so many draft picks that it verges on silly, giving them an all but unlimited amount of space to raise the price on good free agents and pay their multiple first round picks.
what i would propose is a few things:
1) make a salary cap a true "salary cap" and not just the "suggestion" it is right now. I propose either of the following:
a) make it illegal to trade for cap room or b) set a limit to how much additional cap room a team can accumulate for a season. this number doesn't have to be determined right now. (note that this isn't necessarily the same as the "salary adjustment" number on the site))
2) assess a penalty for cutting players before the season is over. Essentially, right now salary cap is seen as a limit. my suggestion is that it should be seen as a "budget", and, for example, cutting a player with a total salary of 2 million after, say, 4 games, would count as a 500k cap penalty, which was that player's salary over the number of weeks he was on the team.
3) the rookie wage scale needs major work. i don't know if anybody ever did work on the rookie wage scale or if it was just made arbitrarily but the math behind the rookie wage scale is pretty bad. The whole point to a rookie wage scale is to balance high level picks with low level picks, so that one team cannot afford too many high picks. as it stands, a team could afford to pay 24 first round picks on their roster as long as they were at least a 12th overall.

If you click the link above, you'll see the math that i've done as far as total cap money and how that relates to "% of expected cap", which is the percentage of that number, as it relates to $3 mil, (which is $72 mil / 24 roster spots). As you can see, the 100% number, which should be in the middle of the scale of all picks, is near the top of the scale, which means that the wages are way too low. you'll see the second sheet i provided, moves that number down to the beginning of the 2nd round, and adds more RBs to punish teams more for making bad draft picks.
4) disallow teams from re-signing players theyve cut, just to save money. plain and simple. If you cut a guy, you can't bid on any of the threads that are created to sign him within, say, 2 or 3 days.

One person had brought up the subject of a small Practice Squad, as can be seen a few threads below this one, that subject has been discussed majorly in the past and shot down. Doesn't mean we can't bring it up again, just pointing out it may have trouble being passed. FYI in the past I was on the side of having one, but many good points were made against one...

It is all about supply og demand I remember not long ago CAP had a to high value and 1st round picks was traded for 5M CAP. I think that that made people afraid of using CAP for for FA signings because it was worth more trading for picks and that created an inflation in CAP. I agree that there is to much CAP avaliable but but we also have to make sure it doesn't get to high a value. I think that the early picks could have a higher contract but it is a fine balance. I agree that roster bonus is the penalty for dropping a player so you should be able to resign a player at the risk of losing the player if someone outbid you.
